Job Title: Placemaker (Family Engagement and Leadership Lead)

Salary: $50,000 plus (based on experience)

The Role:  

As a Placemaker, you will provide insights, connection opportunities and advice to individuals with a disability and their families to envision a more inclusive life in the community. Beyond building relationships with families across Cape Breton, you will establish opportunities to strengthen their connections to one another and support them in their advocacy for change. Using a human rights lens, you will assist families in accessing the resources and navigation required to transform support and build the necessary community capacity to ensure the inclusion of their loved ones. The ideal candidate will have strong connections in Cape Breton and the ability to build rapport and influence decision-makers.  

  

As Nova Scotia enters a critical time of transformation of support and services for people with disabilities, you will be part of a vibrant team that will directly impact and bring positive change to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families across Cape Breton. Above all, you will clearly and consistently communicate the organization's unequivocal commitment to human rights, equity and inclusion. As a staff member of Inclusion Nova Scotia, you will be a part of a collaborative and knowledgeable team. You will also have access to a federation of resources and connections around the country to support you in this role.  

  

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Family connection—Build connections and support families in Cape Breton, envisioning an inclusive community life. Grow families' access to the resources, support, and advocacy work provided by Inclusion Nova Scotia.   

  • Family Engagement—Strengthen families' engagement with one another by designing and delivering opportunities to connect locally in communities across Cape Breton. Establish a family work group to support Remedy's work. Deliver opportunities for families to envision an inclusive life in the community, learn about Remedy, and navigate support.   

  • Partnerships – Leverage connections to businesses and organizations and support them to ensure more inclusive service delivery that supports persons with a disability.      

Qualifications:  

  • Experience with family engagement, building relationships with diverse communities and supporting individuals with navigating supports.   

  • Strong presentation and workshop facilitation skills. Experience planning engagement events or sessions will be considered an asset.   

  • Connection to local businesses, organizations and community leaders in Cape Breton.   

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build relationships quickly, connect people and influence decision-makers.   

  • Empathic listener with the ability to problem solve and generate new ideas.   

  • Demonstrated understanding of human rights, social inclusion, diversity, and advocacy for individuals with disabilities. Knowledge of the Human Rights Remedy and PATH will be considered an asset.   

  • Education or experience in community development, social sciences, or family counselling is considered an asset.  

  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license and access to reliable transportation.  

  • Results oriented mindset, with strong project management skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
