Having grown up in Ottawa, Ontario, and spending all her childhood summers on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Stephanie Carver moved to Halifax in 1990 to complete her undergraduate degree (Honours BA in English & French) at Dalhousie University. She has since worked as an elementary French Immersion teacher (BEd & MEd MSVU) for over 25 years, and has extended her passion for education to a range of extracurricular activities, committee work, and leadership development. Together with her husband she has also raised three sons ages 23, 20 and 17, the youngest of whom has Autism, Intellectual Disability, and ADHD. Any free time she has is spent near the ocean, reading or hiking in the woods with her family and two dogs. She also loves singing with others, and has an eclectic taste in music.

 

Stephanie was a Board member with Wee Care Developmental Centre from 2007-2012, where she chaired a highly fruitful Fundraising Committee. In 2016, she served as Secretary with Halifax Association for Community Living, and joined Inclusion Nova Scotia's board in 2017. She has worked enthusiastically as a member of the Transition Committee, as Chair of Governance and as Vice-President. As she learns and prepares for her youngest son’s  transition from the public school system to community, Stephanie is deeply concerned about the gaps that exist between needs and opportunities for Nova Scotians with intellectual disabilities. As President of Inclusion Nova Scotia, she will work vigorously to help amplify the lived experiences of families and individuals living with intellectual disabilities, and to insist that we should all have equal opportunities to live, play and work in community.
