What is the Human Rights Remedy?

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy is a landmark decision that recognizes the systemic discrimination faced by Nova Scotians with disabilities. In 2021, a human rights case found that the Province of Nova Scotia had discriminated against people with disabilities by failing to provide adequate community-based support. This ruling was the result of a human rights complaint filed by three individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, along with a systemic complaint brought forward by the Disability Rights Coalition.

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy outlines the steps the government must take to make sure people with disabilities have real choices about where and how they live, with the right supports in place. The goal is to ensure more inclusive, community-based support with more choices for people with disabilities.

At Inclusion Nova Scotia, we are excited about what this means for individuals and families. It’s an opportunity to build a better system – one that truly supports people to live independent, full lives. We are passionate about working alongside individuals, families and partners to shape a future where everyone has access to the supports they need to thrive.

We can support you and you with:

  • Information and Advocacy: We help individuals and families understand their rights under the Human Rights Remedy and can help you advocate for supports and services that reflect the inclusive life that you want.

  • Person-Directed Planning and Visioning: We can support you and your family to explore what ‘a good life’ in community looks like and help with making a plan

  • Bringing Families Together: We create spaces for families to connect, share experiences and work together to advocate

We also host information sessions for families, organizations, businesses and community partners about the Human Rights Remedy. These sessions include an overview of the Human Rights Remedy, the 6 key directives, where are we now in the 5-year plan and ideas on what can be possible because of the changes.
