Melissa Higgins
I am a proud mother of two beautiful girls, a wife, and an elementary school teacher. Originally from Newfoundland, I have been proud to call Nova Scotia home for nearly 20 years.
My oldest daughter, Katie, was born with Pallister-Killian Syndrome, and her journey has profoundly shaped who I am and the work I am passionate about. Being her mother has inspired me to become a strong advocate for inclusion not only within systems, but within our communities as well.
Connecting with Inclusion Nova Scotia opened my eyes to what is possible for Katie and for so many other individuals and families. It has strengthened my belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful life, to be included, to have a voice, to build relationships, and to be valued as a contributing member of their community.
My hope is to help create communities where people with disabilities are not simply included, but truly welcomed, supported, heard, and given the same opportunities as everyone else. I am passionate about using both my personal experiences as a mother and my professional experience as an educator to help create positive change and ensure that my daughter and others like her have every opportunity to live their best lives.
